Marcia Ambrose November 28, 2024

Marcia Sinclair Ambrose (Hodsdon) of Croton-on-Hudson, New York and more recently of Truro, Massachusetts, passed away on April 4, 2022. Marcia was 76 years old.

Born in Melrose, Massachusetts, daughter of the late John W. Hodsdon and Barbara P. Hodsdon (Price), Marcia grew up in Melrose and graduated from Melrose High School in 1964 before attending Northeastern University in Boston, Massachusetts and graduating from their nursing program in 1968 as a Registered Nurse. Marcia married David W. Ambrose in 1966 and was married to him for 48 wonderful years until his passing in 2015.

Marcia was very involved in raising her two sons and several of David’s five children from a previous marriage, including Nathaniel who was only 4 years old when they married. Marcia was a loving and caring mother, stepmother, grandmother, step-grandmother and step-great grandmother, often putting her nursing skills and no-nonsense New Englander advice to use – like it or not. She seemed to always be whistling as she went about her everyday activities. Marcia enjoyed genealogy and comparing notes with her cousins, perhaps influenced by having spent many teenage summers working on the farm in Meredith, New Hampshire that has been in her family since 1801. But she loved family reunions and reuniting with long-time friends even more – particularly those she was able to host in Truro, Cape Cod where she spent her summers with her family before retiring and moving there year-round in 1993. Chatting around a fire on Fisher Beach making smores, collecting clams in the shallows of Cape Cod Bay and making home-made clam chowder, going to lunch with the Lunch Bunch of Truro and Wellfleet, or playing a game of dictionary, Scrabble or cribbage were just a few of the many things that brought out Marcia’s infectious laugh. Marcia will be best remembered for helping those around her through her selfless mothering, grandmothering and public service. In 2019 Marcia, who suffered from Alzheimer’s Disease, moved to upstate New York to be closer to her son, Dennis, and his wife, Betsy. She was blessed to spend her final months in their loving care and the care of the wonderful nurses that looked after her every need.

Marcia was predeceased by her husband, David W. Ambrose, and her brother, Waldron P. Hodsdon and is survived by her son Douglas W. Ambrose, his wife Kelly and their children Dean, 17, and Peyton, 15, of Rowayton, Connecticut; and her son Dennis W. Ambrose and his wife Betsy of Webster, New York. She also has 5 step-children, 7 step-grandchildren and 7 step-great grandchildren.

A Memorial Service will be held on September 24, 2022 at the Wellfleet Congregational Church in Wellfleet, Massachusetts at 11:00 am. A reception will immediately follow in the Fellowship Hall of the church. In lieu of flowers, please donate to the Alzheimer’s Association or a charity of your choice.
