Q: Should I inform my family of my decision to be cremated?

A: Yes, it’s important to communicate your intentions for cremation to your family, close friend, or attorney. Many choose to pre-arrange their cremation, involving family members in the process. This not only ensures your wishes are known but also provides peace of mind to your loved ones.

Q: What should I do when a death occurs?

A: If a death has occurred, please contact CSOWNY immediately at (585) 544-4500. We are here to assist you 24 hours a day. A Licensed Funeral Director will handle the transfer of the deceased to our facility in compliance with New York State regulations, and we will guide you through the necessary arrangements.

Q: Am I required to purchase a casket when I select cremation?

A: It’s not mandatory to purchase a casket for direct cremation. Most cremations are conducted using an Alternative Container made of plywood and pressboard, which we provide as part of our service. According to crematory requirements, the cremated remains must be placed in a rigid, leak-proof container.

Q: Is embalming necessary if I choose cremation?

A: In New York State, embalming is not required for cremation. However, if you opt for services that include public viewing, your funeral service provider may require embalming. It’s important to discuss these details with your provider to understand your options.

Q: Can I have calling hours?

A: Yes, you can arrange calling hours for an additional cost. There are two types: traditional calling hours, with the embalmed remains present for public visitation, or memorial calling hours with or without the urn present,, often using photographs to honor the deceased.

Q: Are Funeral Services appropriate with cremation?

A: Memorial Services are certainly encouraged and can be held in various locations, such as our Funeral Home, a Church, Synagogue, or a family home. Even the Catholic Church now permits Funeral Masses with cremated remains present.

Q: Am I required to Pre-Arrange the Services with Cremation Service of Western New York?

A: Pre-arranging services is not required, but many find comfort in knowing their arrangements are prepared in advance. Pre-arranging can alleviate the burden on family members during a time of grief.

Q: Do I need to pre-pay my arrangements for cremation services?

A: Pre-paying is not a requirement if you decide to pre-arrange with Cremation Service of Western New York. However, opting for pre-payment can lock in the current price for our services. We offer the option of creating a “Funeral Arrangement Agreement” or establishing a trust account in your name, ensuring funds are used solely for the services rendered, with any excess returned to your next of kin or estate.

Q: Will I be entitled to Social Security or Veterans Benefits?

A: A surviving spouse or dependent child may receive a one-time lump sum allowance of $255.00 from Social Security. Veterans may be eligible for an allowance of $450.00 if they were receiving disability benefits or if death occurs in a veteran’s hospital. It’s advisable to check with the respective agencies for the most current benefits information.

Q: What form of final disposition is appropriate?

A: The choice of final disposition for cremated remains is deeply personal. While inurnment and entombment are traditional, many today opt for scattering ashes in a place of significance to the deceased’s life. Keep in mind, certain regulations regarding the scattering of cremated remains must be considered and can be discussed with your Funeral Director.

Q: Is it necessary to purchase an urn when I select cremation?

A: Purchasing an urn is not mandatory. Cremated remains are returned from the crematory in “Temporary Urns,” secure and suitable for interment or scattering. If you desire a more permanent option, Cremation Service of Western New York offers a wide selection of urns to choose from.

Q: If we choose to be interred in a cemetery, would there be additional charges?

A: Yes, interring cremated remains in a cemetery incurs charges for the grave opening. Depending on the cemetery, you may also need to purchase an urn vault. Discuss with your funeral director to understand the specific regulations and costs associated with cemetery interment.
